older和elder的區別

　　1、用于家人之間表示長(cháng)幼關(guān)系，通常用elder(在美國英語(yǔ)中也用older)。

　　例句：

　　Tom is my elder (older) brother.

　　湯姆是我的哥哥。

　　2、elder和older都指年長(cháng)，但elder通常指出兩個(gè)人的長(cháng)幼之別，是表明一個(gè)身份。而older則指年紀較大。

　　與其說(shuō)：The older brother is four years older than the younger one.

　　較年長(cháng)的(哥哥)比較年幼的(弟弟)大四歲。

　　不如說(shuō)：The elder brother (表明大哥身份) is four years older (指年紀較大) than the younger one.

　　3、elder有時(shí)用作轉義，指職位、身份較高的人。

　　例句：

　　He is an elder statesman.他是一位政治元老/資深政客。

　　4、older專(zhuān)指年齡的大小而言，既可用于一個(gè)家庭成員之間，又可用于非同一家庭成員之間。

　　例句：

　　My elder brother is twelve years older than I am.

　　我的哥哥比我大十二歲。

　　Mr.Chen is older than I am by two years.

　　陳先生比我大兩年。

　　5、older常與than連用，但是elder決不能和than連用。

　　正：He is older than I am.

　　誤：He is elder than I am.

　　6、older只能用作形容詞，elder既可作形容詞，又可作名詞。

　　例句：

　　My elder brother is twelve years older than I am.

　　我的大哥比我大十二歲。

　　Tom, you need to be polite! They are all our elders.

　　湯姆，你要有禮貌，他們都是我們的長(cháng)輩。

　　7、請注意，elder只能用來(lái)指人，不能指物;older既可以指人的年紀，也可以指物的新舊。

　　例句：

　　Jack is three years older than Jill.

　　This is the oldest temple in Taiwan.
